THE AUSTIN UNIQUE STORY

Austin Unique was founded in 2002 by longtime Austin resident Johnny Barnett. Like many Austinites, he initially arrived as a student at UT, fell in love with Austin, and stayed. The small town feel, the music, the sense of familiarity and belonging and the multitude of first-class Tex-Mex options all spoke to his soul, and another Austinite was born! Working through the years for various small local businesses, whose flexible employment and scheduling structures allowed him to pursue his musical ambitions and still make a living, he got a feel for what made this town so special and different from his suburban Houston home.

The demise of one of these small local businesses – Clean & Lean – was the original impetus behind Austin Unique. Clean & Lean was a place where you could work out, let your kids play while you did laundry, read the paper, get a cup of coffee, visit with your neighbors, hear good music, make new friends and fall in love. As Clean & Lean closed it’s doors for the last time in the late 1990’s, Johnny started wondering what it would take to help other small, local businesses thrive. His answer- promote the awareness that Austin is special in large part due to it’s businesses, and thereby support those business by bringing more customers through their doors.

Initially designed as an on-line business directory, Austin Unique has evolved into a marketing/networking/events-oriented enterprise, with monthly events featuring local vendors, networking business owners, live music and fun! - the perfect atmosphere in which to meet a new customer or business owner. We all do business with people we know and trust- Austin Unique is where that knowing begins.
